One Million Stories - 200 years of Chinese Australians
Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust is pleased to announce the upcoming event ‘One Million Stories’, hosted at Springvale Botanical Cemetery’s Lotus Garden and conducted as part of the Chinese Museum’s current exhibition.
We warmly invite you to join us on Sunday 16 September at 2.00pm as we celebrate 200 years of Chinese Australian culture. This will also be an opportunity to recognise the life of prominent community member, David Neng Hwan Wang (1920 – 1978) – Melbourne’s first Chinese-born councilor and highly respected entrepreneur.
Speakers at the event will include special guest of honour, Barry Shying, great grandson of Mak Sai Ying (the first recorded Chinese settler in Australia in 1818) as well as community leaders and family members sharing insights into Mr Wang’s remarkable journey and dedication to Melbourne’s Chinese community.
Following the unveiling of a specially commissioned bust and plaque commemorating David Wang we invite you to join us in the function rooms at Café Vita et flores for refreshments and a viewing of a magnificent jade burial suit from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD).
Multicultural Melbourne’s character owes much to two centuries of Chinese migrants making this city their home. The influence of these hardworking people, and their community leaders, has played a key role in blending Chinese culture into the city we know and love today. We look forward to celebrating this significant milestone with you at this special event.
RSVPs are essential, please fill out the form below or call (03) 8558 8278.
