Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery has a number of monumental graves available for purchase. These graves allow for a full monument to be placed at the grave site.
Where a family has an existing grave, additional interments may be possible after:
- the cemetery checks its records and the site to ensure there is sufficient room
- ownership of the grave is clarified
- payment of applicable burial or other appropriate fees.
Plaques
For existing lawn graves families often record the names and key details of the deceased on bronze plaques. A range of designs are available through the cemetery. There are many ways to personalise a plaque e.g. through the use of photographs and emblems.
Recognising that burial locations remain in place for all time, many families choose to have their plaque placed on granite. The granite provides a solid foundation and an attractive border for the plaque.

Monuments
Within some areas of the cemetery, headstones or monuments are able to be placed upon the grave. Usually families hire a monumental mason to design and supply the headstone or monument. On your behalf, the mason must ensure that the design is approved by the cemetery and obtain the necessary permits before any work begins.
Registered Monumental Masons may work within any of the cemetery sites administered by the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust.
Headstones, monuments and other memorials arranged directly with masons remain the maintenance responsibility of the family.
